Honor System
As with all educational programs sponsored by BYU, a high sense of personal honor and integrity is expected in the completion of BYU Independent Study courses. The assignments are intended to prepare you for the examinations and should be your own work.

As determined by your instructor or BYU Independent Study administration, if evidence of academic misconduct on assignments or exams is established, or if your submitted work is found to be profane or unduly disrespectful of others the following consequences may apply:
  1. You will fail the lesson
  2. You will fail the lesson and be denied the opportunity to resubmit the lesson
  3. You will fail the lesson and the class
  4. You will fail the lesson, fail the class, and will be ineligible to enroll in a specific course or any of our courses
The same consequences may also apply to all online communications including emails, discussion boards, webinars, and chats. Specifically:
  • Please use kind and respectful language in all communications, profanity or vulgarity is not allowed.
  • Extra-curricular activities, personal interests, and other topics not related to the course are NOT appropriate.
  • Cheating or sharing of assignment answers is considered academic dishonesty.
  • Do NOT include personal signatures or personal links not having to do with the web course.
Note: Plagiarism is defined as the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. This may also include when a student copies and pastes directly from another source and passes it off as his or her own, or if the student fails to cite a source after loosely summarizing it into his or her own words.

Privacy
FERPA Policy
By an act of Congress, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of the student's educational record. In order to be in compliance with FERPA, we require the student's Social Security number or Confirmation Number before releasing any personally identifiable or educational information to the student, counselors, or parents. High school students: By supplying your high school's ACT code, you give BYU Independent Study permission to inform your high school of your activity and grades in the course[s].
Please click here to read the Notification of Rights.

When the student turns 18 years old, or enters a post secondary institution at any age, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parents to the student. If the student is enrolled in BYU Independent Study’s non university-level courses and is 18 years old or older or is enrolled in BYU Independent Study’s University courses, regardless of age, we cannot release educational records to anyone other than the student. Parents, spouses, siblings, or friends do not have access to the student’s educational records unless the student provides signed permission granting a specified person rights to access his or her records. However, if the parent can provide proof that the student was claimed as a dependent in the previous income tax year, the parent may have access to the student’s educational records.

Click here for a printable FERPA permissions form. If the student was claimed as a dependent in the previous income tax year, proof may be attached to the form that is returned. Proof of Tax Dependency must be provided each time information is requested from the student's educational records.
Privacy Policy
Brigham Young University respects the privacy of our students and patrons and implements safeguards to protect sensitive personal information and academic records. Under the Family Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) BYU has an obligation to protect student records. Additionally, other laws and regulations require that the University protect sensitive personal information and financial records. University systems require individuals to login using secure Network Identification (Net ID) and passwords. Sharing of Net IDs and passwords violates confidentiality and degrades the ability of the University to protect secure information.

Among the programs offered by The Division of Continuing Education are programs for children and youth, ages 3-18, which makes personal security of utmost importance. Our systems have recently been updated so our processes for registering participants and providing courses comply with FERPA and other privacy regulations. All participants (or their parent/legal guardian for youth registrations) are required to individually log in so personal, financial, and educational information remains secure and protected. If you have questions about this policy and our commitment to protect our participants, please contact the BYU Continuing Education registrar at (801) 422-8925 or toll free at (877) 221-6716.

Instructor-graded Assignments
Instructor-graded work is graded by the instructor rather than by computer. Grades will be posted approximately two weeks after the assignment or exam is received in our office. Please include a cover sheet when submitting your assignments, indicating which lesson you are submitting. If you are enrolled in an online course or if you need more cover sheets, you can print them online (print cover sheet). We prefer assignments to be submitted sequentially and one at a time. Do not submit more than three instructor-graded assignments in one week. You may not turn in the same work for two different courses.

E-mail
Instructor-graded assignments can be submitted through the Submit Assignment link on our Web site at elearn.byu.edu. You can also e-mail the lesson with attachments to is_lesson@byu.edu. MS Word (doc) or Rich Text Format (rtf) is preferred. Please include your name, Net ID, confirmation number, course name, and lesson number in the subject line or body of the email.
Fax
You may fax your instructor-graded assignments to BYU Independent Study at your cost. (Speedback assignments cannot be faxed.) We cannot return your assignments to you by fax. To ensure receipt, please include a cover sheet that shows your name, the number of pages you are sending, BYU Net ID, and confirmation number. Please make sure the lesson is in the correct order when you fax it. Do not use pencil for your faxed assignments. Our fax number is (801) 422-0102.
Mail
All instructor-graded assignments mailed to BYU Independent Study must include the submission cover sheet, which came with your course materials. You may submit any of your assignments by mail to:

  BYU Independent Study
120 Morris Center (MORC)
Provo, UT 84602-0300

NOTE: BYU Independent Study is not responsible for items damaged in the mail.
Resubmissions
Log in to your course on our Web site to resubmit assignments. A resubmit button will appear on your Assignments and Exams page for each lesson that allows a resubmission. If a resubmission is allowed, you will only be given ONE resubmission per lesson. There is a $10 fee for each resubmission. You may not resubmit any assignments or midcourse exams after you have requested the final exam.

Exams
Important:
It is very important that you find someone willing to proctor your exams within two weeks of enrolling in your course. Waiting to find a proctor until you need to request your exam may result in an inconvenient travel distance or being unable to finish your course. Please make sure you have an available verified proctor in your area before beginning your course.
Requesting Exams
Courses may have midcourse exams, final exams, or both, depending on the course. You may take the midcourse exam at any time during the course. However, you can only request the final exam after all course assignments and examinations have been submitted and your proctor has submitted the proctor certification form.

You must request your final exam before the course expiration date. You must pass the final exam in order to pass the course. Once you request your exam, you have one month in which to take the exam. Exam reprints are $15.

If you wish to have your exam express mailed, you must pay a $20 express mail fee when you request the exam for both U.S. and international mail. For express mailed exams to be delivered the next day, they must be requested before 12pm Mountain Time. If you wish to have your exam express mailed both ways, we can include a prepaid return express mail envelope with your exam for a total fee of $30. International mail, however, cannot be sent with a prepaid express mail envelope. All exams received Friday after 12pm Mountain Time, Saturday, or Sunday will be processed on the following Monday.

All high school exams must be taken in a supervised setting with a certified proctor and all college exams must be taken at a certified college testing center. Please allow two weeks for your proctor to receive the exam. You are responsible for contacting your proctor or college testing center to find out whether your exam has arrived and to determine an appropriate time to take the exam.

Online
To request an exam online, login to your account, select the desired course, and select the Request Exam option in the Assignments and Exams section. Fill in all information, including where the exam will be administered. Exams ordered online are usually shipped according to shipping deadlines.
By Phone
Exams may be requested by calling 1-800-914-8931 (toll free) or 801-422-2868 (local).
By Mail
You may request your exam by mailing a Request for Examination form from your course manual to BYU Independent Study.
Retakes
In some cases, you may retake an exam once for a $15 fee. Retakes must be done within 30 days of taking the original exam. All course work, including exam retakes, need to be completed by the course expiration date.

You must pass the final exam in order to pass the course.

Receiving assistance from any person during an exam is considered cheating and is grounds for receiving a failing grade for the course.
  • Unless otherwise specified in the exam cover sheet, exams must be taken without the assistance of books, notes, or any other outside help. Use of cell phones or other electronic devices will result in a failing grade for the test and may result in a failing grade in the class.
  • All exams must be mailed to the educational facility at which the proctor is employed; no exceptions. Exams may not be administered at the proctor's or the student's home. Allow for adequate mailing time.
  • Photo identification is required.
  • Exams cannot be faxed to our office; all materials must be returned by mail.
